We Are What We Think
Saturday, March 17th, 2007

A fair warning: this post delves into something I’m passionate about, which is somewhat philosophical in nature. So if you’re of a certain religious persuasion and easily offended by others, then please skip over this blog post. If not, read on…

The Secret” is taking the entire world by storm. It deals with the “Law of Attraction,” in that we attract to ourselves what we think and feel, and that our perceptions mold our reality.

As Earl Nightingale proclaimed in “The Strangest Secret,” one of the first self-help programs I’ve ever bought: “We become what we think about.”

You may have seen it talked about on Larry King, Oprah, and many other talk shows. It’s the most successful Internet launch of any product. It hit Alexa #1 soon after its launch, and propelled to the Amazon.com’s #1 best selling book and DVD within a few months.

It appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Time Magazine, and even on the cover of Newsweek, which came shortly thereafter.

But is “The Secret” truly worth the buzz? Or is it just an old-world philosophy packaged in some newfangled marketing? The answer to the former is definitely “yes.” But for the latter, it’s “yes” and “no.” Let me explain…

My favorite quote of all time is from RenĂ© Descartes, which in Latin, goes: “Cogito Ergo Sum.” Translated, we all know it as: “I think, therefore I am.” And yes, it’s something that’s been around for ages.

My own life is living proof that it works. If you know my story, then you know that I went from being an abused child of an alcoholic and undergoing two bankruptcies, to becoming a successful entrepreneur. My life literally turned around when I applied “The Secret” to my life. So I personally believe it to be true.

(It was a pleasure when I was asked to write the copy for John Assaraf, one of the authors behind “The Secret” and whose life seems to parallel mine. From a “street kid” whose teenage years were plagued with violence, drugs, and crime, to a billionaire and now motivational speaker, John’s story, like mine, is another perfect example of the Law of Attraction in action.)

However, the recent hype, which is indeed a simple marketing twist on an ageless axiom, may be a little over the top for some people. But critics and cynics aside, I also do believe that it’s about time the word got out to reach the masses the way it has.

It’s definitely nothing new. It’s been around since the beginning of time. But there are some important reasons why this meme is finally becoming so popular — and I’ll come back to this in a moment.

One of my greatest passions is sociology. I love learning about history, culture, languages, and human behavior. It’s been one of my most fascinating topics — something I’ve studied in both formal and personal education.

I love to learn who we are, where we come from, what makes us unique. I studied many cultures, nationalities, and languages, as well as their origins and the behaviors that are innate to specific cultures.

And one such societal staple is certainly religion.

One of my favorite classes in college was studies in comparative religion. And unlike many people who seek out what makes us different, I’ve been more fascinated by what makes us similar.

I’m not here to proselytize for any religious persuasion. However, in my studies and personal research, I have read and studied the “bibles” of most religions, such as the Bible, the Torah, the Dhammapada, the Baghavad Gita, the Qur’an, and more.

I’ve studied Christianity, Judaism, Islamism, Buddhism, Theosophism, Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism, Shamanism, Objectivism, Paganism (from Greek and Roman polytheism, all the way to Wicca), and more. And yes, even the Church of the Subgenius. (R.A.W., may you rest in peace!)

I’ve studied all the great spiritual masters, leaders, prophets, philosophers, and writers. One of my favorite contemporary authors is the great mythologist Joseph Campbell, who taught us to “follow our bliss.”

I have also immersed myself in the teachings of Florence Scovel Shinn, Wayne Dyer, John Randolph Price, Paul Solomon, and many others.

I did so in an attempt to try to find the one common denominator in all religions, in all cultures, in all societies. Some people say it’s love. That may be true, but what I have found is, in almost all cases, the common denominator has been “You are what you think.”

Proverbs 23:7 states, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” “Life consists in what a man is thinking of all day,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. Or, as the Buddha said in the opening line of the Dhammapada (1:1): “We are what we think. All that we are is the result of our thoughts.”

These are just some examples. I’ve seen this again and again. In almost every religious book, teaching, philosophy, or theology, there has been some reference to this timeless wisdom.

Again, I’m not here to enter into a theological debate of any kind. But I do believe in the law of attraction. And for the longest time, scientists have worked hard to disprove the existence of a Supreme Being, and to prove the irrationality of religion, prayer, and worship.

But lately, and probably why “The Secret” is making such a splash, is that science is finally, and paradoxically, proving what scholars, spiritual leaders, and philosophers have known to be true all along.

In movies like “What The Bleep” (which I highly recommend), quantum mechanics theorists and quantum physicists discuss that science is indeed proving that we are what we think.

One of the most fascinating studies in this area is Dr. Masaru Emoto’s water crystallization experiments. It’s amazing that thoughts can actually alter the composition of water. And since we are mostly made up of water ourselves, this is proof that thoughts and feelings affect physical reality.

This philosophy has literally changed the lives of millions of people. For many others, “The Secret” is just a bunch of hype. And I can certainly appreciate and respect both sides.

But in the middle, we find the majority of people trying to make sense of it all.

When we see the movie, and perhaps even adopt its concepts, some of us are probably left scratching our heads trying to figure out how it works, seeking real-world applications of the Law of Attraction. If only there were practical, easy-to-follow steps we can take.

That’s why it is certainly no secret that, when I was asked to review “The Secret Science of Getting Rich” home study course via ReviewMe.com (as a paid review request), I was utterly thrilled to do so.

It’s a course based on a seminar given by several authors of the runaway best-selling book and movie, which helps its students apply the teachings behind “The Secret” to their lives. I haven’t taken the seminar or bought the product, so my knowledge is only limited by the content on the website. But one thing I do know…

There is a tendency for naysayers to look askance at programs like this, but never has there been a program offered that combines the credibility of teachers like Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for The Soul), Bob Proctor (success coach), and Michael Beckwith (spiritual leader) with a run-away-best-selling book and movie.

The teachers are inspirational. And the curriculum itself is worth a look.

The program includes 10 jam-packed CDs, over 15 hours of MP3s, a 180-page workbook and planner, the book itself, a variety of tools to guide you, all included in a beautiful, leather-bound briefcase to carry the course with you, wherever you go.

And the course even includes access to a private members website, where you can network and rub shoulders with likeminded students and experts.

A great bonus is that the course also comes with it’s own business opportunity. If you’re so inclined, you can promote the course yourself, with a pre-designed website and ready-to-use promotional materials, so you can make money promoting the seminar.

At the very least, check out the website and signup for the free 7-part email course. It’s a worthwhile read.

Nevertheless, if you have always wondered how you can achieve success in your life, whatever “success” means to you (and being “rich” doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be of a financial nature, either), then I recommend that you check out The Secret Science of Getting Rich.

"The Secret" and the Science of Getting Rich

"The Secret" and the Science of Getting Rich - by Cheri & Mark Fish

Have you heard of the DVD called "the Secret"? Well it isn't such a secret anymore. The DVD was released in March 2006 and according to Time Magazine, the DVD has sold 500,000 units within the first 6 months. Today it sells well over 5,000 copies a day! It ranked in Amazon's Top-5 sellers during Christmas week; and a tie-in hardcover book just entered the Top 10 on the New York times bestseller list.

The amazing thing about "the Secret" is that you won't find it in your local Blockbuster or Barnes and Noble, it is selling briskly through new-age bookstores, New Thought churches like Unity and AGape and the official website at http://www.thesecret.tv/. "It's become the biggest selling item in the 30-year history of our store," says Harmony Rose Allor, a buyer at West Hollywood's popular metaphysical bookshop, The Bodhi Tree. it is "word-of-mouth" marketing at it best.

So what is the secret to "the Secret's" success? It's is a "transformational movie", where a person's view on life and the laws of life will no longer be the same after watching this movie. In a sense, it has created the same kind of effect as "the Da Vinci Code" and the 2004 hit cult movie "What the Bleep Do We Know". The movie has created such waves that it has already been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live and the Ellen DeGeneres show.

At the core of the movie is a central philosophy called "the Law of Attraction". In fact, the movie itself was inspired by this very same law when the producer read a book called "the Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace D. Wattles. This books was written in 1910!

This philosophy states that we create our reality, both good and bad! The message is delivered through 24 "teachers" which include prosperity preachers, chiropractic healers, relationship gurus, life coaches and motivational speakers — into one clear, cohesive voice. The movie is a "must watch" for anyone interested in taking charge of their life and in creating the life of their dreams.

Following on the success of the Secret, 3 of the core teachers - namely Bob Proctor and Jack Canfield have collaborated to produce a wealth building program called "the Secret Science of Getting Rich Seminar". This program is based on the book that inspired the movie and is set to make history as the fastest selling personal development program in history.

What is the Science of Getting Rich about? Well in the words of Wallace D. Wattles, "The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects. Therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich." The Science of Getting Rich is all about teaching how to do things in this "certain" way to create wealth.

The success of this program is built on several rock solid foundations. These factors include: the phenomenal success of "the Secret", the timeless concepts from the Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles, the credibility of successful personal improvement teachers and New Thought leaders of our time, and the Internet as the distribution medium.

The Secret - How to Apply The Law Of Attraction

The Secret - How To Apply The Law Of Attraction
By Inger Nilsson

The law of attraction works whether you are aware of it or not, therefore it is better for You if you use the knowledge to Your advantage.

Your knowledge (no matter what knowledge it is) does not matter, makes no difference, if you do not know how to apply it.

Since you are suppose to feel good to attract good - to begin with, start out with looking for the things you are grateful for in your life.

Whenever you feel negative inside, take a deep breath through your nose and breathe out slowly through your mouth formed as a cornet. If the negative feeling persists, breathe in again, in short sequences, then push the air out with fast short puffs. Also, when you breathe in, stretch out, lower your shoulders and look at the sky. Feel the negative vibration slowly disappear. Do this until you have released all of the negative feelings within.

If somebody have evoked (for some reason or another) the negative feeling - do the above and think that it is that person who has the issues, not you. Stay focused on the good feeling and keep your vision (dream) clear in your mind at all times. See the movie "The Secret" over and over and read the book The Law of Attraction, until you understand the message completely.
Listen to Esther Abraham-Hicks and her fabulous teachings on the Law of Attraction, over and over, until you are equally clear about the messages - until you really understand the process and how it works.

As I have seen the movie The Secret over and over again, I have discovered more and more layers of the secret and the law of attraction, from what the scientists and authors in the program are saying. Then I have been able to apply it more and more. As soon as I have applied the law of attraction I have experienced immediate results.

I can see it in the response I receive from the people I am close to and in the way I relate to everyday ordinary tasks.

Now I can not wait to apply the secret and the law of attraction on greater and greater dreams and visions every day. I have already made my list of gratitude. I have already made my list of the things that I want to have and do. I have put my "Universe Bank Check" on the wall opposite my bed. It is the first thing I see when I wake up.

My next step now is to get my own vision board* for the pictures of the things I intend to realize with my new awareness of how the law of attraction is working. I am so exited to see the secret materialize by the law of attraction my dreams into the reality of my life.

I always use to worry about the "How" of the matter - now I have given the "How" to the universe, and am completely focused on the "What". I am now focusing on the prosperity I am about to have, both inner and outer. I have also thought of and felt the power of the "receiving" part, that the secret and the law of attraction is talking about. I am now ready to receive the things I desire, the things that I want.

I do not bother about how this will be done, I am completely focused on what I want to do and have and am ready to receive it. I close my eyes and open my mind to receive it. I think about the things and the people and all that I am grateful for first. I feel gratitude and humbleness when I think about how lucky I am in many respects compared to so many others.

I see all the ordinary things around me - things I usually take for granted - but now, I see them in a different light. I am grateful for them, thinking about how fortunate I am compared to many others, living under more uncertain circumstances than myself.

I think of my son, my parents and my friends and that I live in a country blessed from wars for many centuries. I also look at my pet, my beautiful little cat and how peaceful she seems right now. I think of how loving she can be, for example whenever I am down and out. Then she comes to my side and literally stretch her paw out to pat me on my cheek. Is that not beautiful - then tell me what is? I feel grateful to have her in my life.

I think of my mother, now old and sick. One day when we had been in their cottage in the country, she wrote something on a piece of paper and handed it to me as I was leaving for my home: "Thank you for a wonderful day", it said. There is nothing wrong with her speech, but she wanted to give me this plain message on a piece of paper. She was truly grateful - for so little! And my heart fills with love, humbleness and gratitude for my mom, whenever I think of this moment.

I am grateful for my parents, their kindness and never ending love and support. I also think of my son, his inner being. I feel gratitude for his considerate and thoughtful nature, his kindness and sweetness. His sense of humor and sharp senses, his creative spirit and talents.

I am now focused on to align myself with the universe. To think, feel and be in tune with the universe. The universe is an obedient force that respond to my wish. The universe is at my command. Whatever I wish - whatever I want, I can have, do, or make.

Therefore - concentrate on the prosperity, not on the lack. Breathe deep whenever you feel doubt. Think of something or somebody you love. Relax and let the universe care about the mechanisms of the creative process. Close your eyes. Visualize your dreams in your mind. Paint the picture of your dreams in your mind. See the things you want, the people you want to meet and know, the house and the things you want to have, the money you want to own, in your mind.
Do not let doubt get in the way - if you feel doubt - relax and take a deeper breath, focus and zoom in your vision of your life.

*A vision board is a board of any material where you can put your pictures, drawings, etc. of the things and persons you want to have in your life. The things you want to have, the places you want to go to and the people you want to meet and be with. It is a board filled with images and text which visualizes your dreams. If you want you can call it a "vision board" - to remind you of your dream. The purpose of a vision board is to keep your dream alive right there in front of your eyes to look at on a daily basis. They also talk about the vision board in the movie "The Secret".

Beginning the Law of Attraction

Understanding the Law of Attraction

I know that you probably know someone who is great at manifesting. You also may have even felt somewhat envious of that person because from the out side appearance they seem to have everything and getting these things with little effort as if they had a four leaf clover or lucky star.

Maybe t hey were born with the knowledge of manifesting what they want already intact. I know that once we learn something in another life (I am a believer in past lives) is not lost and that we can always choose to bring those traits with us as we move from life experience to life experience

If you want to attract abundance you need to have the knowledge. Any other skill people have, and manifesting is no different from playing football or flipping burgers. How good you are at it will depend on how much effort you put in to it. Although some of us are keener at certain life skills does not in any way shape or form mean you cannot become skilled in attracting abundance to yourself.

The people who have mastered manifesting abundance that you know of are efficient in attracting what they are thinking about or creating into their lives. With practice you will be able to do the same if not more. They do it so well that it seems effortless and natural. They would not blink an eye if you said or suggested they did not deserve something. It just is not a part of their reality.

Once you have learned how to better understand on how the “Law of Attraction “ works is your first step in bringing abundance into your life

Law of Attraction

We are the ones who create our own reality. We attract to our lives (relationships, financial, spiritual) etc that which we give our attention to or focus. Now is the concept simple? Yes but is the concept easy? No. If you would like to hear that it is as simple as staying positive and saying affirmations then let me ask you “how has that worked before for you?” My quess is it probably has not worked the way you had hoped for.

When the focus is on having less we create that experience for ourselves. When we focus on “I hate this job” When you put your attention on it then how can you possibly see any aspects of your job that could be satisfying? Just wanting something is not going to bring that to you when we continue to focus on the not having of it. The only thing you will have is “not having” and will totally block what it is you truly desire.
Another mistake that we sometimes make is we tend to think of wealth in terms of how much we have in the bank. ..Focusing on winning the lottery or at bingo is a fruitless event. If Focusing on winning the game is focusing on not having enough. My reason for this thinking is I have had friends who held this desire. They wanted to share what they would do with the winnings. Yet some of the things they say they would do are actually things they could be doing right now with what they already have. On a smaller scale. So why don’t they? It is because they are clinging to the notion that there is not enough. This is usually based on fear. Let me give you an example.

A women’s mother owns a car that is in need of repair. The daughter mentions “if I won the lottery I would buy my mother a new car”. But in reality, the daughter has the means to take her car to the auto repair shop and pay of 200.00 that the car needs for repairs. The car would be fixed so her mom would have a dependable car to drive. If you asked why she doe not go ahead and have the car repaired, she answers, Gosh I only have $1200.00 in my bank account and taking that out would knock out quite a bit of my savings. If my car should go on the fritz or one of my children should get sick where would I get the money from? Can you see the daughters true focus is on “not enough” rather than being focused on winning the lottery? When we focused on “not enough” it will not matter how much money we have it will never be enough. Suggesting that she pay for her mother’s car repairs brought about her fears into the open. It would be wonderful if the daughter could trust that by helping her mother and paying for the repairs she would not put herself at any risk. But for the time being, while she feels she must hold onto that fear reality. The best thing would be to suggest to the daughter to focus on visualizing her mothers driving safely and in comfort and without having any mechanical breakdowns. Would that not be a positive image/thought to get the picture to become her reality? Maybe she could introduce the laws of Attraction to her mother so she can start attraction a new car for herself among the other things she might desire.
